Engagements

Relaxed engagement sessions in the places that make East Tennessee worth photographing, and a chance for us to get to know each other before the wedding.

An engagement session is the least stressful hour you will spend on your wedding planning. There is no timeline, no guest list and nothing to coordinate except what to wear. We walk, we talk, I give you something to do with your hands, and somewhere in the middle of it you forget the camera is there. Those are the frames you will end up printing.

Choosing a location

You do not need a famous backdrop. Some of my favorite sessions happened in a couple's own backyard or the coffee shop where they had their first date. That said, this region makes it easy to be ambitious. Cades Cove and the roads above Townsend for wide mountain light. Norris Lake or the Tennessee River at sunset. Ijams Nature Center and the trails around Knoxville for something green and quiet. Downtown Knoxville, the Old City and Market Square for brick, neon and evening energy. Chattanooga's riverfront and the Walnut Street Bridge if you are planning your wedding there. Roan Mountain in June when the rhododendron is out. Tell me what feels like the two of you and I will suggest a spot and a time of day to match.

Timing and light

I schedule engagement sessions for the last two hours before sunset whenever possible. The light is soft, the crowds have thinned, and the mountains turn blue in layers. Early mornings work beautifully too, especially in summer when the afternoons are hot and hazy. Autumn books quickly because the color in the Smokies is short and everyone wants it; if that is your plan, reach out early in the year.

What to wear, briefly

Wear something you already feel good in, then think about how the two outfits look side by side rather than matching. Soft, muted tones sit well against the greens and stone of this landscape. Bring a second look if you like; we can change halfway through. Comfortable shoes for the walk, nicer ones in the bag.

Engagement sessions are included with every wedding collection and can also be booked on their own for anniversaries or a proposal you want documented. See the investment page for details, the FAQ for timelines, and the weddings page for how the big day works. Back to the full portfolio.
