Portraits

Portrait sessions are how many of my wedding couples come back to me: first as two, then with a baby, then with a small crowd. I photograph families the same way I photograph weddings, with a light hand and a lot of patience. We start with the grouped portraits everyone wants for the wall, then let the session loosen up so the kids can be kids and the images start to look like your actual life.

Who I photograph

Families of every size and shape, including the extended kind with grandparents in from out of town. High school seniors who want something more personal than the standard school portrait. Expecting parents in the last stretch before the baby arrives. Individuals who need an honest, well-lit portrait for work or simply for themselves. If you are not sure whether what you have in mind fits, ask; it probably does.

How a session runs

Sessions last up to two hours on location, which is longer than most families need and about right for a family with a two-year-old who needs a snack break. We meet somewhere that suits you: a park or trail near Knoxville or Oak Ridge, a stretch of the Smokies, a lakeshore, or your own home and porch, which is often the best choice for small children. I bring no props and very few poses. Your job is to show up, be with each other, and let me handle the light.

Seasons and scheduling

Spring and autumn are the busiest portrait seasons here, and autumn weekends in particular fill months in advance. Summer sessions happen early in the morning or in the last hour of light to avoid the heat. Winter has its own quiet beauty in the foothills and is far easier to book. I do not run mini-sessions; every family gets a full session and a full gallery.
